There's so much choice out there in the way of wellness trends, or tips for how to look after yourself and feel calm. Let's be honest, sometimes it can be hard to know what will work for us on an individual level, and to find methods that don't cost the earth.

I like to keep things simple and remind myself of some of the fundamental - and crucially - simple ways to stay grounded and minimise stress day-to-day. Particularly at times when I feel anxious or my body tells me something's not right. It's easy to forget that the body manifests mental stress and trauma in so many ways that can go unnoticed.

Here are my five tips to help you get back to feeling more grounded...

Tip 1: Ground yourself

Pause, notice the ground beneath your feet. Listen to the sounds of nature. Hold your hands on your heart. A few reflective moments like this at any point in the day can help you connect with your surroundings and calm your nervous system.

Tip 2: Breathe mindfully

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, focus on deep diaphragm breathing. Try putting one hand on your belly and one on your chest and breathe in through the nose, out through the mouth. This is an easy game-changer and can really help you reset if you’re feeling anxious.

Tip 3: Move and stretch

Suffering from ‘tech neck’? Overdone it at the gym? We all need to give our overworked or fatigued muscles some TLC. Take a few minutes throughout the day to get up from your desk and stretch your arms, take a walk, get into child’s pose – whatever works to get the blood flowing. Not only will you feel less stiff, but it’s likely you'll feel refreshed and more focused. And spend five minutes stretching after that run. Your legs will thank you!

Tip 4: Set an intention

Is there a word or phrase you’d like to live by today? Think of something that will guide you and bring clarity to your day. Don’t overthink it. This can really benefit us on the days where we feel overwhelmed or a little gloomy. Try cutting out the inner ‘noise’ and focus on a simple daily mantra. I keep reminding myself to ‘be present’.

Tip 5: Remember to rest

Perhaps one of the most important and overlooked in our high-pressure society. When we're busy and the demands on our time are never-ending, things can feel as though they're snowballing. Instead of finding time to recharge so we can be more productive and present, we can feel unable to stop. Making sure restorative rest is built into our routine is vital for helping our bodies and minds to preserve energy and avoid overworking our muscles.
